Tribal Tourism

Tribal tourism divides opinion. This relatively new form of holiday, sometimes called ethno – tourism, is by its very nature controversial. It is hard to find any middle ground, you tend to be either for it or against it, and until fairly recently it was hard to find any general information about it at all. Tribal tourism is typically the holiday maker staying with the indigenous population of a destination, and the location is usually remote and exotic. [Read more...]

OUTDOORSMAN.

The word ‘outdoorsman’ often conjures up images of Davy Crockett or muscular American lumberjacks, and this may have been true in the 19th century, but modern lifestyles mean that anyone can be an outdoorsman. The drive for personal fitness means a whole new generation of people have discovered the great outdoors – and made it a way of life. Perhaps a better word to describe this lifestyle choice would be ‘outdoor enthusiast’ – someone who has chosen an outdoor lifestyle and has a desire to be outdoors no matter what the weather. Outdoor Activities

If the thought of outdoor activities conjures up pictures of Boy Scout holidays and camping in cold tents in the rain, think again. In the 21st century, the range of outdoor activities is enormous, with the opportunity to get involved in activities of all types in practically every continent on earth. [Read more...]

JUNGLE TOURISM

From Africa to Australasia, in India, Bangladesh and Madagascar, there remain patches of ancient primeval rainforest known as ‘jungles’. These areas are teeming with life; – plants and animals that can be seen nowhere else on earth and which are often endangered or threatened with extinction. Despite covering only a small fraction of the Earth’s surface, jungles are intensely important resources. [Read more...]

Environmental Education.

Environmental education has changed dramatically in schools over the years and especially since the advent of the creative curriculum in the early part of the 2000s. If you went to school between 1950 and the late 1980’s, chances are environmental education would have consisted mainly of ‘nature study’ in the primary years, followed by 5 years of skills based education at secondary school. ECOTOURISM

Our planet is a unique place. The desire to visit more remote destinations has never been stronger, and with visits come problems – human impact can devastate rare and delicate eco systems permanently, as well as having negative consequences for indigenous communities and wildlife. [Read more...]

BACKPACKING.

The idea of taking time out from a busy life to see the world is not a new one. As early as the 18th Century (or perhaps even before) young men would take a ‘grand tour’ around the cities of Europe before they settled down, to complete their education and visit ‘wonders’ such as Rome or Venice. In the 1700’s, such trips were exclusively for the wealthy. Travellers would have taken servants, a whole train of luggage, and acquired numerous mementoes from the places they visited on their journeys. [Read more...]

Adventure holidays

It would be true to say that many adventure holidays are not for the faint hearted! An adventure break is exactly what it sounds like – the chance to experience amazing locations, heart-stopping experiences and sights and sounds that will never be forgotten. This doesn’t mean that only thrill seekers should take the opportunity to go; adventure breaks can also be a chance to do something truly unique; to experience a different culture and consider a different perspective on life. Activity holidays

Sixty years ago, activity holidays were mainly undertaken by boy scouts, who swapped the comforts of home for tents, a camp fire and stories by firelight. Intrepid explorers might take off and visit the Amazon, and some brave (and wealthy) parents sent their children off to Camp America in the summer holidays, but mass tourism, such as it was, did not cater for activity – you went on holiday, it was then up to you to organise what you did when you got there. Now there are as many activity holidays as there are budgets; whether you want a top of the range cookery school in a French chateau or a camping holiday, there is a company who will provide it for you.
